Strand:2 Sports & Leisure
Section 2: – Park and Recreational Spaces
This section is aimed at developing in the village a connected network of paths and trails which allows everyone old enough to cross a road to go on a small adventure and exercise without the need for transportation. Leveraging existing facilities and places, the proposed scheme will develop the area around Barryscourt Castle with a set of purpose-built, age specific playgrounds, including an outdoors basketball court, 5 a side pitch and a skateboard park, as well as a trail connecting to Slatty’s Bridge, equipped with such exercise equipment, as parallel bars, chin-up bars, ladders or Gate climbs and stretch stations. A pavilion will also be built to provide a dedicated space for staging cultural events and other public activities.
The trail will lead to Slatty’s Bridge where a nature reserve and wildlife observation point will be set up, which can be used by the schools in the village for teaching purposes.
The trail will also connect to the area known as the Glenn offering 7 kms of walk up to the Reservoir in Tibbotstown and back. This development will allow Carrigtwohill to rival Ballincollig or Mallow in terms of access to Regional Park grade recreational facilities.
